My Purpose and Perspective

As a travel agency owner at Dreamverse Travel, my commitment to fostering a supportive and equitable environment for travel advisors extends to both those who are employed directly by the agency and those who operate as independent contractors (ICs). The distinction between being an employee of a travel agency and operating as an independent contractor is significant, and it's a choice that can profoundly impact one's career in the travel industry.

Being an employee of a travel agency often provides a structured environment, with set responsibilities, hours, and benefits, including a fixed salary or wage. This arrangement can offer stability and a sense of belonging within the company culture. However, it may also come with limitations on earning potential and flexibility, as well as more direct oversight of daily tasks.

On the other hand, working as an independent contractor offers a higher degree of autonomy, allowing for a more flexible schedule and the potential for increased earnings. ICs have the freedom to cultivate their own client base, choose their specialization, and work from anywhere. This level of independence is paired with the responsibility for one's own business expenses and the need to manage personal taxes and retirement planning.

At Dreamverse Travel, we advocate for the rights and fair treatment of independent contractors. We believe that ICs should enjoy a fair commission split, reflecting their hard work and dedication to their clients. Moreover, we support the principle that independent contractors should retain all of their planning fees, without the need to share these earnings with the agency. Of course, responsibility for processing fees associated with payment platforms like Stripe or Square is a standard business expense that ICs would handle independently.

We also understand the importance of flexibility and autonomy for ICs. While there are certain contractual obligations to abide by, which ensure a consistent and high-quality service to clients, we ensure that our contracts are designed with the nature of independent contracting in mind. This means avoiding stipulations that would typically apply to employees, thereby respecting the independent status of our ICs.

It's crucial for anyone considering the independent contractor route to carefully review any contract before signing, ensuring it reflects an IC relationship rather than an employee relationship. This includes understanding the commission structure, fee retention, and any obligations or expectations set forth by the agency.

At Dreamverse Travel, we are committed to supporting our network of independent travel advisors, offering them the freedom to grow their businesses on their own terms, within a framework that supports their success. We believe in creating partnerships that are beneficial for both the agency and the independent contractor, fostering a community where everyone can thrive.
